Educating for Sustainability
Explorations Academy strives to model sustainable practices throughout our organization. Only when our commitment to environmental stewardship is realized in practice can we effectively teach students to be global citizens.
We have generated this Educating for Sustainability Checklist as a way to assess our practices. We invite you to compare Explorations Academy's performance with other schools!
__ The curriculum places significant emphasis upon stewardship, ecological literacy, and principles of sustainability
__ The school building reflects a commitment to limiting environmental impacts through strategies like energy efficient lighting, a location with excellent public transportation access, a greenhouse and green roof, etc.
__ Students spend significant time actively contributing to the health and sustainability of the local area through service learning projects
__ Field study activities give students active off-campus experiences to help them understand the significance of the region’s ecology, economy, and society
__ School vehicles, where possible, use biofuels, and the school strives for carbon neutrality in overseas expeditions through tree planting and other carbon offset methods
__ All decisions about curriculum, spending, student evaluation, and administrative strategies are made locally (using broad and varied input)
__ The
school embraces leading-edge programs like Smart Trips, Toward Zero Waste,
Watershed Pledge, Green Power, and buying local.
Explorations Academy is proud to represent each of these strategies in our ongoing work with youth. Come visit our school to learn more about how we embrace global responsibility!
